The fourth "Hong Kong Teochew Festival", co-organized by the Overseas Friendship Association of four cities in eastern Guangdong and co-organized by 46 affiliated associations under the Chaozhou General Administration, with the theme of "Heritage of Teochew Charm", will last for five days from November 20 to 24, 2024 Held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center 1DE.

Teochew opera originated from Southern Opera in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and has a history of more than 400 years. Nan Opera, also known as Zhengzi Opera or Zhengyin Opera, was introduced to the Chaozhou area in the early Ming Dynasty. It was called Chaoqiang and Chaodiao. It changed from Mandarin with the phonology of the Central Plains to Chaozhou dialect. It was a localized opera at that time. In the mid-Ming Dynasty, there were unique singing styles and performance forms. After the Qing Dynasty, there were names such as Chao Opera, Chao Yin Opera, and Chao Bai Opera. After the founding of New China, Chaozhou Opera was officially named "Chaozhou Opera". In addition to the spread of Teochew opera in the Chaoshan area and the border between Fujian and Jiangxi, many overseas Chinese of Teochew origin live in places as far away as the Nanyang Islands. The huge overseas market of Teochew overseas Chinese has played a good role in the development of the entire Teochew opera industry.

d) Caizhao Skills Exhibition

Color tie, also known as paper tie, is one of the traditional handicrafts. It was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008. The tie-making technique was also included in the "Representative List of Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2017. Although there are various explanations for the classification of tie-making, it can generally be divided into two categories: "art tie-making" and "paper tie-making". The former is mainly used for red events, used for birthdays and festive occasions, and will be retained after the holidays; The latter is mainly used for white things and will be cremated immediately after use.

e) Chaoshan Lantern Riddles Workshop

Since the 1960s, the Lantern Festival has been held every year at the Cheung Chau Teochew Association (formerly known as the Cheung Chau Teochew Folks Association).
Lantern drinking and lantern bidding activities are still used today, and Chaoshan lantern riddles are still widely popular in cultural activities organized by Hong Kong Chaozhou community.

f) Origami making workshop

Tie Zuo plays an important role in traditional festival celebrations and folk religious ceremonies. In Hong Kong's Chaozhou Bon Festival, common large-scale paper sacrifices include Tuas King, Shenma, etc., most of which are tied with traditional Teochew paper bamboo frames. The process is more complicated, and there are also smaller origami products. This workshop will teach participants how to use Chaozhou gold and colored paper printed with scriptures to fold into various gold silk hangings, large ingots, lotuses, gold tributes, etc., as well as various gold pineapples of different sizes. and lotus tower.

g) Trendy school

"Chaozhou School" aims to share Chaozhou culture, customs and information, and provide relevant Chaozhou dialect teaching to the public. Through an interactive mode, the public can experience how to learn Teochew dialect. People who are new to Teochew dialect can also instantly learn to express some interesting and vivid vocabulary through pinyin. The Chaozhou dialect is known as the "living fossil" of the Chinese language, preserving many ancient Chinese phonology, vocabulary and grammar applications. The Teochew people's communication in Teochew dialect is particularly cordial and has a more "family" feel. Chaozhou dialect is a bridge for the younger generation to inherit culture and enhance ethnic identity.
